YMCA Lifeguard Training

Learn aquatic lifesaving skills and become a certified professional. This class includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid Basics, and Oxygen Administration.

  • Must be 16 years of age by the end of the class
  • Must pass the pre-course skills test

Information About the Course

  1. Pre-course skills will be tested on the first day of the course.
  2. All classes include extra time for lunch/dinner.
  3. Bring a bathing suit, towel, cap, goggles, warm clothes to change into, and snacks.
  4. Participants will be expected to study all skills at home and be prepared to present those skills at any subsequent class.
  5. There is a comprehensive written and practical exam on the last day of the class. All participants must successfully complete this exam in order to receive certifications.

Pre-Course Skills Test

  1. Swim 300 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order:
    • 100 yards front crawl using rhythmic breathing
    • 100 yards breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick, glide sequence
    • 100 yards of either front crawl or breaststroke
  2. Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a ten pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object, and exit the water without using a ladder within one minute and forty seconds.
